I met with my Student Council on Friday. It was the first time we had an actual synchronous meeting and it was so very good to see everyone. We spent most of the meeting just sharing how we were doing and how we had been passing the time. One of my students shared that she had started painting, another shared he had started running. Then, something quite moving happened, one of my students shared that he had been writing songs and after a little bit of nudging, he took out his guitar and sang us this song:

I have to admit that I had to turn off my video camera because I was crying. I wasn’t the only one.

It was shortly after that I jokingly said, “How happy are you all to sleep in, and play video games whenever you want?” There was a unanimous consensus. It wasn’t just me who missed being at school. And of course it so obvious to say out loud; we all did. One student said, “I never would have thought in a million years I would say this, but I miss school so much.”

Talking to students about the learning they are doing and what school is, what makes me very excited about our final @GlobalEdSsChat topic for the year: What is School? GlobalEdSschat is a student-led twitter chat where students talk about issues that are important to them.

You MUST listen to what they say about the challenges of remote learning and think about how these insights might inform what school looks like, not just in our current context, but into the next school year.
