I spent the morning at an outdoor Field center as part of a Fall Colours photography session led by my awesome and super creative friend, Tina Zita and our guide, @RangerRidley as well as a few other friends and educators who were up for a learning adventure.
I originally signed up because I know I have much to learn when it comes to photography. When I woke up this morning, however, I realized how much I had to do and I almost cancelled. And yet, I also longed to be outside on a beautiful Fall day to clear my head. I am certainly glad I went.
I learned how to add gridlines to my photos so I can take photos which actually follow the rule of thirds without looking like I took them while balancing on a tightrope.
I learned how to use the magnifier tool in the edit section of my iPhone and how to take photos with interesting filters on.
I took a photo of one object from different angles and vantage points to create a totally different picture.
I used a magnifier (inexpensive add on from Amazon) to get a very close up photo.
I couldn’t help but wonder…
I was thinking about how good I felt. I felt centred and one with nature, while holding a device in my hands.
There were two little girls on the adventure with us, who asked the best questions and I thought about why we don’t get our kids outdoors more often to explore their neighbourhood, to pay close attention, and to inquire. Never once, did they use their device for anything other than the powerful camera tool.
What if we spent less time wishing devices didn’t exist, and more time showing kids how to use their devices to create really cool things? To capture and share beauty that has nothing to do with selfies?
Here is the interactive lesson Tina shared (Pages) (and the PDF copy).
