I am working on a roundtable discussion presentation for the FETC conference in Florida on January 14-17 in the Library Leader’s stream. My presentation is called, AI Adventures in the School Library: Ethical Considerations, Accessibility, Innovation, Creativity, and Productivity.
This seems like a lot for one 60 minute session, but honestly, I continue to look at the affordances and limitations of AI with a critical eye and I think we need to help our students ask questions about copyright and bias and sustainability while also helping them to use AI to support personalized learning. My friend Owen Peery, in conversations we were having about AI in our Edumatch voxer group, challenged my thinking by saying that any time he embraces a new technology tool he asks these two questions:
What problem do I need to solve?
How will this tool help me to solve this problem?
As I watch my pre-service teachers struggle with keeping up with lesson plans, and knowing that next term, they will be planning units, I have been thinking about how I might leverage AI to help solve this problem. They need to learn the content, create lessons and units, differentiate instruction, create accommodations for students with IEPs and develop relationships with kids. I feel like I was able to do much of this effectively as a seasoned teacher but even then, I felt like I was drowning half the time and wondered if I was really meeting the needs of all of my students.
I am excited that on December 9th at 430 PM EST, Jason Buccheri, and Nadeem Aljaber from TeachAid.ca have agreed to do a deep dive and a demo of the TeachAid.ca tool. And since they are going to spend time showing me, I thought it would be cool to go live so you can see it too.
In this interactive session, I hope to discover how TeachAid.ca can help educators:
- Create and implement hyper-localized, equitable curricula that address diverse cultural needs.
- Enhance teacher efficiency and effectiveness
- Support tiered and IEP instruction, streamlining the process to better serve all students.
And I will be asking questions the whole time!
